Sports field design included grading, dimensional control, and subsurface french drain systems with permeable soil sections to allow the fields to be playable during wet weather conditions. The project also included the design for a new athletic complex for which engineering services included detailed grading, on-site and offsite utility design, design for new parking and the design of a 0.6 acre-foot underground storm water detention facility. Special consideration was given to high fencing and netting requirements around athletic fields due to the limited space available and the proximity of buildings and parking areas. Wind load considerations were critical in the screened fencing design and specifications provided by MTR Engineers. Madison High School in San Antonio, Texas. Components of design included a stormwater detention/retention pond to mitigate for increased runoff from the project site and the overall high school campus; site grading around existing and new buildings in close proximity with over 15 feet of grade change; utility design for sanitary sewer and five different water systems including fire, domestic, irrigation, well and reclaimed water from rainwater harvesting. The project is also seeking certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) project at the gold level. The design of pervious pavement systems and other low impact development practices were also incorporated in the design of this project. A flood study of the adjacent FEMA Floodplain was performed, along with a drainage study and design of public and private drainage improvements. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition grade athletic facility to be the home of the University of the Incarnate Words (UIW) newly founded football team. This renovation project included the demolition and construction of the all weather track and synthetic field facilities, bleachers, field house and storage buildings on the active campus of the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. The site is located next to one of the most active springs in Bexar County, and the headwaters of the San Antonio River. Team Members were tasked with the design of a groundwater drainage system below the field. The solution was an extensive network of perforated and conventional drainage piping embedded in a layer of gravel and isolated from the synthetic track and field drainage system by an impermeable liner. The project included design phase services for the expansion of the football field stadium. MTR Engineers ability to complete projects on time and close project coordination was critical to meet the accelerated design schedule set by our client needs.

Texas was very broad and encompassed a variety of complex civil engineering services. Members of “MTR Engineers” worked on this Northside Independent School District (NISD) 133 acre tract of land initially performing a feasibility analysis, a master development plan (MDP) for several additional NISD developments on the tract. Work included assisting NISD in negotiating an Interlocal Agreement with the City of San Antonio, and performing civil services as a prime consultant for three separate phases of major thoroughfare construction for the extensions of Kyle Seale Roadway and De Zavala Roadway adjacent to the high school tract. On-site development of the school included platting, a Utility Service Agreement with SAWS, Drainage Study, Level II Traffic Impact Analysis, public and private drainage design, stormwater pollution prevention, site grading, subfloor grading, utilities, permanent water quality pond improvements, off-site detention, and competition grade athletic fields including all-weather track & field improvements. MTR Engineers’ quality engineering and the relationship that we have with the City of San Antonio, The San Antonio Water System and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was critical to obtaining the various approvals of submitted plans and documents within the needed timeframes. The diversified knowledge base, and direct involvement of MTR Engineers’ Principals in the design and planning has been key to the success of this project.

South San Antonio Independent School District located on the existing South San Antonio High School Campus. This new design and renovation project involved working with the Architect on the site master planning and providing the design, dimensional control and construction administration for a new Gymnasium, Athletic Field House, spacious Courtyard area with Ticket Booths, concessions and bathroom facilities, associated roadway, parking and utility infrastructure. The project included the demolition and construction of an all weather track and new synthetic turf field. The all-weather synthetic surfacing of the track and field were designed with a sub-surface drainage system that required the extension of a storm sewer outfall offsite across and into City of San Antonio street right-of-way. Team members worked closely with the Contractor to ensure the project met the owners scheduling and budgetary requirements. MTR Engineers’ experience designing for work on active campuses and with multi-phased projects played a large role in the success of this project.
